Filtrationsmediet, often translated as filtration medium or filter medium, refers to the material used in a filtration process to separate solid particles from a fluid, which can be a liquid or a gas. The effectiveness of a filtration medium depends on its physical properties, such as pore size, surface area, and chemical composition, which determine its ability to retain contaminants.

Filtration media can be broadly categorized into several types. Mechanical media, such as filter paper, filter cloth, or membranes, physically trap particles based on their size. Adsorptive media, like activated carbon or zeolites, remove contaminants through chemical or physical adsorption onto their surfaces. Depth media, often composed of fibrous materials, trap particles throughout their thickness, offering high dirt-holding capacity.

The choice of filtration medium is critical and depends on several factors, including the nature of the fluid being filtered, the size and concentration of the contaminants, the desired purity of the filtrate, the flow rate required, and operating conditions such as temperature and pressure. Applications for filtration media are widespread, ranging from water purification and air conditioning systems to industrial processes like chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage production. They are also essential in medical devices, laboratory analysis, and environmental control technologies.
