Filtraalset

Filtraalset is a modular filtration assembly used to remove particulates from liquids in laboratory and industrial settings. The assembly typically includes a filter housing, filtration cartridges or membranes, gaskets, end caps, and connection fittings. Configuring the housing and media lets users adjust flow, retention rating, and pressure tolerance for a given application.

Origin and use: The term appears in Dutch technical literature and is often translated as filtration set or filtration assembly. Filtraalsets are used in chemical analysis, pharmaceutical production, water treatment, and food and beverage processing to produce clean liquid streams for testing or product handling.

Operation and design: Liquid flows through a sealed chamber in the housing. Media range from depth filters to membrane cartridges, with pore sizes from submicron to tens of micrometers. Systems use standard clamp or threaded connections, gaskets, and chemically compatible materials. Selection factors include chemical compatibility, temperature, flow, and allowable pressure drop. Maintenance may involve cartridge replacement and sanitization or sterilization in aseptic lines, plus proper disposal of spent media.

Variants and materials: Compact single-use units suit small-scale work; modular units allow staged filtration. Materials include polycarbonate, stainless steel, or chemical-resistant polymers such as PEEK, chosen for solvent compatibility. Some filtraalsets are designed for cleanrooms with validated sterile pathways.

Advantages and limitations: Benefits include flexibility, scalability, and easy media changes. Downsides include dead volume, risk of leaks at seals, and ongoing consumable costs.
