Filterstations, also known as filtration stations or water treatment plants, are facilities designed to remove impurities and contaminants from water. Their primary purpose is to ensure water is safe for consumption or suitable for various industrial and agricultural applications. The process typically begins with the collection of raw water from sources such as rivers, lakes, or groundwater. This water then undergoes a series of treatment steps within the filterstation.

Initial stages often involve screening to remove large debris like leaves or plastic. Sedimentation tanks may be used to allow heavier particles to settle out. The core of the filterstation's operation involves filtration, where water is passed through layers of materials such as sand, gravel, and charcoal. These layers trap smaller suspended particles and impurities. Following filtration, disinfection is a crucial step to kill any remaining harmful microorganisms. Common disinfection methods include chlorination, ozonation, or ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Advanced filterstations might incorporate additional processes like activated carbon filtration for chemical contaminant removal or membrane filtration for highly specialized purification. The treated water is then stored and distributed. Regular monitoring and testing are conducted to verify the quality of the water at various stages of treatment and before it reaches consumers.
