The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. It consists of approximately 7,640 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, broadly categorized under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city is Manila, while Quezon City is the most populous city. The country shares maritime borders with Taiwan to the north, Japan to the northeast, Vietnam to the west, and Indonesia and Malaysia to the south.

With a population exceeding 110 million, the Philippines is the thirteenth most populous country worldwide and home to diverse ethnic groups and languages. Filipino and English are the official languages. The nation operates as a constitutional republic with a presidential system, where the president serves as both head of state and government.

The economy is mixed, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, services, and remittances from overseas Filipino workers. Major industries include electronics assembly, business process outsourcing, and tourism. The country faces challenges such as natural disasters, poverty, and infrastructure deficits.

Culturally, the Philippines reflects a blend of indigenous, Spanish, American, and Asian influences, shaped by over three centuries of Spanish colonization and subsequent American rule. This heritage is evident in its languages, cuisine, architecture, and predominantly Christian population, with Roman Catholicism as the largest denomination. The nation gained independence from the United States in 1946.
