Filamentary

Filamentary is an adjective describing something composed of, or resembling, filaments—long, slender thread-like structures. In science, objects that appear as a tangle or network of filaments are described as filamentary. The term is used across disciplines to emphasize a thread-like morphology or connectivity rather than a solid, homogeneous mass.

In biology, filamentous forms include filamentous bacteria and fungi. Fungal hyphae are filamentous threads that aggregate into mycelium, and many bacteria grow as long filaments. In eukaryotic cells, actin filaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules form the cytoskeleton, providing shape and movement. In materials science and engineering, filamentary structures include polymer or metal filaments, nanowires, and fiber-reinforced composites. Filamentary growth or fracture can occur in metals and ceramics, for example, dendritic growth during solidification, or crack propagation along filament-like paths; in energy storage, lithium dendrites can form filamentary structures, posing safety concerns.
