Fieldstewarding is the practice of managing and protecting field sites—natural, cultural, or research areas—through conservation measures, compliance with research protocols, and orderly public access. Field stewards may be employed by government agencies, universities, museums, NGOs, or community groups, and often work in teams with land managers and researchers.

Settings include nature reserves, wildlife habitats, archaeological or palaeontological dig sites, botanical field stations, and cultural landscapes used for education and science. The role centers on preserving site integrity while supporting legitimate activity such as ecological monitoring, archaeological recording, or environmental education.

Typical responsibilities include monitoring site condition and visitor impact, preventing damage or disturbance, enforcing access rules and permit conditions, coordinating volunteers, guiding visitors with safety and interpretation, assisting researchers with logistics, and reporting incidents or irregularities. They may maintain trails, signage, and fencing, and help with data collection and standard operating procedures to ensure data quality.

Training and qualifications often cover safety and first aid, environmental ethics, species and habitat identification, data collection protocols, GPS and mapping, and risk assessment. Depending on jurisdiction, field stewards operate under supervisory staff such as park managers or lead researchers and collaborate with law enforcement when necessary.

Outcomes and challenges: The aim is to minimize ecological or cultural disturbance while enabling research and public engagement. Challenges include weather, remote locations, visitor conflicts, and resource constraints.
