Ferihegy

Ferihegy is the historical name for the area in Budapest, Hungary, that is now primarily associated with Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The name "Ferihegy" translates roughly to "Feri's Hill," likely named after a former landowner or a local feature.

The origins of the name are tied to the agricultural lands and vineyards that once characterized the region before significant development. In the early 20th century, the area was chosen as a location for an airfield due to its relatively flat terrain and proximity to the city. The first flights from Ferihegy took place in the 1910s, and it gradually developed into a civilian airport.

After World War II, the airport underwent significant expansion and modernization. It officially became Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport in 2011, honoring the renowned Hungarian composer, but the historical name Ferihegy remains deeply ingrained in local consciousness and is still widely used colloquially to refer to the airport and its surroundings.
