Felteori

Felteori is a theoretical framework used in the social sciences to analyze how actors experience and respond to emergent field effects produced by institutions, technologies, and cultural norms. The term combines “field” and “theory” to denote dynamic spaces in which social forces interact with human agency. Advocates view felteori as a cross-disciplinary approach that can accommodate macro-level structures while accounting for individual and collective actions.

Core concepts include field strength, which measures the overall influence exerted by surrounding forces; boundaries, which mark the limits of a given field; and permeability, describing how readily influences pass across those boundaries. Agency is treated as the capacity of actors to move within a field, reshape its contours, or migrate to neighboring fields. The framework often employs mappings of fields and flows—economic, informational, and social—to illustrate how change propagates.

Methodologically, felteori supports mixed-method research that combines quantitative field mapping with qualitative inquiry, interviews, and case studies. Applications span urban planning, online platform governance, organizational reform, and policy analysis, where understanding how fields form and shift can illuminate responses to regulation, technology adoption, or social movements.

Reception has been cautious, with criticisms centered on definitional ambiguity and challenges in operationalizing field constructs. Proponents argue that felteori offers a unifying vocabulary for linking structural conditions with actor-level behavior, potentially enhancing cross-disciplinary dialogue.
