FeldofView

FeldofView is a framework for describing, managing, and rendering the field of view (FoV) in imaging and visualization systems. Designed to be device-agnostic, FeldofView aims to harmonize FoV representations across cameras, lenses, and displays, enabling coherent multi-sensor fusion, calibration, and consistent user experiences in robotics, augmented reality, and surveillance.

Key concepts include angular FoV (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) and distance-based metrics, multiple projection models (rectilinear, fisheye, equirectangular), and calibration data for distortion and sensor geometry. FeldofView provides a descriptor for each sensor, including intrinsic parameters, distortion coefficients, and sensor placement, and it supports dynamic FoV adjustments such as zoom or crop with real-time world-to-device mappings.

Architecture typically comprises modules such as FieldOfViewDescriptor, DistortionModel, SensorProfile, Calibrator, and RenderingBridge. Common workflows include calibration, descriptor generation, and runtime mappings to drive rendering, fusion, or viewport management. The framework emphasizes interoperability by defining data formats and APIs that integrate with computer vision pipelines and graphics engines.

Applications span autonomous systems, industrial inspection, virtual reality and augmented reality portals, and drone imaging, where consistent FoV handling improves sensor fusion, depth estimation, and scene understanding. Limitations include standardization of distortion models across devices and the need for performance optimizations in real-time mappings.

Status: FeldofView exists as a concept and a set of reference implementations discussed by imaging researchers. It is not yet a universally adopted standard, and practical impact depends on community adoption and toolchain support.
