Fehérvérsejtekkel, more commonly known as white blood cells or leukocytes, are an essential component of the immune system. They are produced in the bone marrow and circulate throughout the body in the blood and lymph. Their primary function is to defend the body against infection and disease.

There are several types of white blood cells, each with a specific role. Neutrophils are the most abundant and are crucial in fighting bacterial infections. Lymphocytes, including B cells and T cells, are vital for adaptive immunity, recognizing and remembering specific pathogens to mount a targeted response. Monocytes can differentiate into macrophages, which engulf and digest cellular debris, foreign substances, and pathogens. Eosinophils and basophils are involved in combating parasitic infections and allergic reactions.

The number of white blood cells in the blood can fluctuate depending on the body's needs. An elevated white blood cell count, known as leukocytosis, often indicates an infection or inflammation. Conversely, a low count, or leukopenia, can impair the body's ability to fight off infections and may be caused by certain medical conditions or treatments. Monitoring white blood cell counts is a common diagnostic tool in medicine.
