Fehérjeszerkezeti refers to the three-dimensional structure of a protein. This structure is crucial for a protein's function, as it determines how it interacts with other molecules. Proteins are composed of long chains of amino acids, and the sequence of these amino acids dictates how the chain folds into its final, functional shape.

There are four levels of protein structure. Primary structure is the linear sequence of amino acids. Secondary structure involves localized folding of the polypeptide chain into alpha-helices and beta-sheets, stabilized by hydrogen bonds. Tertiary structure is the overall three-dimensional shape of a single polypeptide chain, resulting from interactions between amino acid side chains, such as hydrophobic interactions, ionic bonds, and disulfide bridges. Quaternary structure refers to the arrangement of multiple polypeptide chains (subunits) in a protein complex.

The precise folding of a protein is a complex process, often guided by chaperone proteins. Misfolding can lead to non-functional or even harmful proteins, which are implicated in various diseases. Understanding protein structure is fundamental to biochemistry, molecular biology, and drug discovery, as it allows for the design of molecules that can target specific protein functions. Techniques like X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and cryo-electron microscopy are used to determine protein structures experimentally. Computational methods are also increasingly employed to predict and model protein structures.
