Fedtstof, also known as lipids, is a broad group of naturally occurring molecules that includes fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins, monoglycerides, diglycerides, triglycerides, and phospholipids. The main role of fats in the body is to store energy. When the body consumes more calories than it needs, the excess energy is converted into fat. This fat is then stored in adipose tissue, which acts as an energy reserve for the body to use during times of fasting or increased physical activity.

Beyond energy storage, fats are essential for various bodily functions. They are crucial components of cell membranes, providing structural integrity and regulating the passage of substances in and out of cells. Certain types of fats, like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, are essential nutrients that the body cannot produce on its own and must be obtained from the diet. These fatty acids play vital roles in brain function, inflammation regulation, and hormone production. Fats also aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) from the digestive tract, ensuring these vitamins can be utilized by the body. Furthermore, fats contribute to body temperature regulation by insulating the body and protecting vital organs.

Dietary fats are categorized into saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats. Saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature and are found in animal products and some plant-based oils. Unsaturated fats are generally liquid at room temperature and include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, found in sources like vegetable oils, nuts, and fatty fish. Trans fats are primarily artificial and are created through a process called hydrogenation, often found in processed foods. Consuming a balanced intake of different types of fats is important for overall health.
