Farvestofferne can be derived from natural sources, such as plants, insects, or minerals, or synthesized chemically in laboratories.

Natural food colorants include options like turmeric, beetroot red, caramel, and annatto, which have been used for centuries in various cuisines. In contrast, synthetic dyes, such as tartrazine (E102), allura red (E129), and brilliant blue (E133), are chemically manufactured and often more stable and cost-effective. While synthetic dyes are regulated for safety, some consumers prefer natural alternatives due to perceived or documented concerns about potential health effects.

The use of farvestofferne is strictly regulated in many countries to ensure consumer safety.
