Farbfehler

Farbfehler is a general term for deviations between the true color of a scene and its reproduction in images, films, prints, or displays. It encompasses perceptual color casts as well as technical artifacts caused by hardware, software, or lighting conditions.

In optics, Farbfehler often refers to chromatische Aberration, where a lens refracts different wavelengths to different extents. This leads to colored fringes along high-contrast edges. Longitudinal (axial) chromatic aberration shifts colors along the image axis, while lateral chromatic aberration shifts colors toward the edges. Remedies include higher-quality lens designs (achromatic or apochromatic optics), coatings, and post-processing corrections.

In printing, Farbfehler describes misregistration or color drift between color separations (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). Misalignment can cause colored halos or borders around details. Causes include substrate movement, roller or plate wear, and press conditions. Mitigation relies on precise registration, regular calibration, and color-management workflows that ensure consistent color reproduction across devices.

In digital imaging and video, Farbfehler can arise from improper white balance, sensor spectral response, demosaicing artefacts, or insufficient color management. The result is a perceptible color cast or inaccurate hues. Corrective measures include proper lighting, RAW workflows, color-calibrated monitors, ICC profiles, and consistent color pipelines from capture to output.
