Farbeinstellen refers to the process of calibrating and configuring colors in a reproduction workflow to achieve a predefined target color. It is essential in print production, photography, textile printing, and digital imaging to ensure color consistency across devices and media.

The typical process includes selecting target color values (for example, ICC profiles or standardized color references such as Pantone swatches), measuring produced colors with a densitometer or spectrophotometer, and adjusting input parameters such as ink density, printer curves, or pigment mixes. Modern workflows rely on color management systems that translate device-agnostic color values into device-specific signals through ICC profiles, enabling consistent reproduction across different devices and substrates.

In offset printing, Farbeinstellen involves setting ink keys to achieve the desired CMYK balance, controlling dot gain and gray balance, and ensuring color stability across runs. In digital printing, calibration aligns the printer with color profiles and monitor settings to maintain consistency between what is seen on screen and on paper. In photography and film workflows, white balance and tonal adjustments influence how colors are reproduced after development and printing.

Challenges include metamerism (colors changing under different light), the influence of lighting conditions, substrate color and texture, ink-substrate interactions, and equipment aging. Regular calibration, standardized lighting, and adherence to established color targets help reduce variability and improve repeatability.
