Faksiviestintään, often shortened to "faksi," refers to the transmission of documents over telephone lines using a fax machine. This technology allows for the sending and receiving of scanned paper documents, such as letters, invoices, or photographs. A fax machine scans the document page by page, converting the image into an electronic signal that is then transmitted. The receiving fax machine decodes this signal and prints a copy of the original document.

The concept of fax transmission dates back to the mid-19th century with the invention of the phototelegraph. However, modern fax machines, as we know them, became widespread in the late 20th century, particularly in business and professional environments. Fax played a crucial role in facilitating rapid document exchange before the widespread adoption of email and digital document sharing.

Despite the rise of digital communication, fax technology, or faksiviestintään, still finds use in certain sectors. This includes legal, medical, and government offices where secure and documented transmission of sensitive information is paramount, and where paper-based records are still prevalent. Some systems also incorporate fax capabilities within multi-function printers or through online fax services that allow users to send and receive faxes digitally.
