It treats format failure as a creative or critical resource rather than mere error, focusing on how failures reveal the materiality and fragility of digital media.

Origin and scope: The concept emerged within glitch art and experimental media practices in the early 2010s and has since been discussed in academic writings and artist projects. Failiformaat can apply to file formats, codecs, document templates, and presentation pipelines—any system that governs how content is encoded, stored, transmitted, or displayed.

Characteristics: Failiformaat scenarios produce nonstandard results such as visual distortions, misalignment, truncated metadata, color shifts, or playback glitches. Practitioners may intentionally corrupt data, exploit nonconformant encoding, or design interfaces that fail gracefully to foreground technical contingency and interpretive ambiguity.
