Fagor

Fagor is a Basque brand name most commonly associated with Fagor Electrodomésticos, a consumer appliance manufacturer that was part of the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation. Founded in 1956 in Eibar, in the Basque Country of Spain, the company grew into a major producer of home appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, and small domestic appliances. It operated as a worker-owned cooperative within Mondragón and expanded its sales across Europe, Latin America, and other regions, developing a reputation for engineering and product design aligned with the cooperative movement.

Within Mondragón, Fagor was part of a broader network of cooperatives that aimed to combine economic activity with social goals. The group ultimately faced severe financial difficulties during the late-2000s crisis, leading to a restructuring that affected several plants and workers. In 2013, Fagor Electrodomésticos filed for bankruptcy protection in Spain, and its Spanish operations were largely dissolved as assets were sold to other buyers.

Following the bankruptcy, some assets and brands were absorbed by other companies, and production under the Fagor name ceased in many markets. The Mondragón network continues to operate related businesses, including Fagor Arrasate, a separate company focused on sheet metal forming, which remains independent of the consumer appliance business. The Fagor brand’s legacy remains in the history of Basque industry and the story of worker-owned businesses in Spain.
