Eibar

Eibar is a town and municipality in the Basque Country, northern Spain. It is located in Gipuzkoa province, within the Debabarrena comarca. The municipality has about 27,000 residents. Eibar sits in a hilly area of inland Gipuzkoa, in a valley that runs through the Debabarrena region, and borders several smaller towns.

The town developed as a center for metalworking and arms manufacture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Dozens of small and medium-sized workshops produced firearms, tools, and machinery, contributing to rapid urban growth and a distinctive industrial heritage that remains part of the local identity. Since late 20th century, the economy has diversified, with manufacturing continuing alongside services, commerce, and logistics, while preserving its historic industrial character.

Culturally, Basque and Spanish are spoken, and the city maintains a Basque-oriented urban fabric with a historic center and several 19th- and early 20th-century buildings. The municipality participates in typical Basque cultural life and local festivals.

Sports: Eibar is known for SD Eibar, the local football club that reached La Liga in the 2010s. The team plays at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium, noted for its compact size and modern facilities.

Transport and administration: Eibar is connected by road and rail to nearby cities in Gipuzkoa and Biscay, and forms an administrative and economic hub for the Debabarrena area.
