FIR-alueet, or Flight Information Regions, are international airspace regions designated for air traffic services. They define the geographic area within which a competent authority is responsible for providing flight information services and alerting services to all aircraft operating within or above the region. The designation and boundaries are established by ICAO in cooperation with national authorities in accordance with the Chicago Convention and its annexes. An FIR generally aligns with a state’s sovereign airspace, but it can extend over international waters or involve cross‑border coordination when necessary.

Within an FIR, air traffic control services are provided where required by traffic density and safety considerations, while flight information service (FIS) and alerting service (ALRT) are available to all aircraft within the region. FIRs enable coordinated management of en route traffic, weather information dissemination, and the coordination of search and rescue activities if needed. The boundaries and operations of FIRs require ongoing cooperation among neighboring states to ensure seamless handoffs and consistent service as aircraft traverse different regions.

The concept is central to global and European airspace management and is governed by ICAO standards and recommended practices. In practice, FIR boundaries may be subdivided into smaller sectors or be linked to other airspace classifications such as controlled airspace or terminal areas to support efficient traffic flow. In Finnish aviation discourse, the term FIR-alueet refers to these regions, and the possessive form FIR-alueiden commonly appears in technical contexts. Overall, FIR-alueet provide the framework for safe, orderly, and efficient air traffic management across national boundaries.
