FIR-alueet, or Flight Information Regions, are international airspace regions designated for air traffic services. They define the geographic area within which a competent authority is responsible for providing flight information services and alerting services to all aircraft operating within or above the region. The designation and boundaries are established by ICAO in cooperation with national authorities in accordance with the Chicago Convention and its annexes. An FIR generally aligns with a state’s sovereign airspace, but it can extend over international waters or involve cross‑border coordination when necessary.
