FFPKlassen

FFPKlassen, or FFP-Klassen, are EU classifications for filtering facepieces used in respiratory protection. Defined by EN 149, they divide disposable respirators into FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3, reflecting increasing filtration efficiency and decreasing inward leakage. FFP1 provides at least 80% filtration efficiency with higher inward leakage; FFP2 at least 94% with lower leakage; and FFP3 at least 99% with very low leakage. These levels are established through standardized tests and marked on the product with CE certification.

FFP masks protect against particulate aerosols and are intended for non-oil-based aerosols; they do not protect against gases or vapors. In practice, FFP2 and FFP3 are commonly used in industry and healthcare; FFP2 is the most common for airborne hazards, while FFP3 is used when higher protection is required.

Effective use requires a proper fit, with a seal between mask and face essential for the stated protection; fit testing is often conducted in high-risk environments. Some models have exhalation valves to reduce breathing resistance, but valves do not filter exhaled air, so their use may be restricted in sterile settings.

In relation to other standards, EN 149 classifications are broadly comparable to non-European systems (for example FFP2 ~ NIOSH N95 and FFP3 ~ P3), though exact equivalence depends on testing procedures and regulations. Users should follow local safety guidance and manufacturer instructions.
