FEUPWARD

FEUPWARD is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to advancing upward mobility through education, technology access, and inclusive policy development. Launched in 2019 by a consortium of universities, research institutes, and industry partners, FEUPWARD seeks to understand and reduce barriers that limit participation in engineering and related fields. The program conducts research, pilots interventions, and shares open resources to support educators, practitioners, and policymakers.

FEUPWARD organizes research projects across data science, social science, and engineering to study pathways into STEM disciplines, from early education to adult retraining. It collaborates with schools and community organizations to develop curricula, mentorship programs, and apprenticeship pipelines, while maintaining an emphasis on inclusivity, equity, and evidence-based practice. An open-data portal hosts datasets and analytical tools to enable replication and broader use.

Governance and funding are structured through an executive committee with rotating chairs, complemented by thematic working groups. FEUPWARD relies on grant funding, in-kind partnerships, and community sponsorship to support pilot programs and dissemination activities. Decisions are guided by ethics and evaluation standards to ensure transparency and accountability.

Impact and reception to date indicate early pilots have reported increased enrollment in engineering-related tracks among underrepresented groups, improved retention in partner programs, and broader access to online learning resources.
