FCAL

FCAL is an initialism most commonly used to denote a forward calorimeter, a class of particle detector installed close to the beamline in collider experiments. Forward calorimeters measure the energy and position of particles produced at small polar angles relative to the beam, providing information on forward jets, neutral particles, and beam-related backgrounds. They play key roles in event reconstruction, luminosity monitoring and vetoing, and in measurements sensitive to the forward region.

Designs vary by experiment and physics goals but typically use a sampling structure with alternating high-density absorber layers and active sensor layers to contain and sample showers within a compact space. Because they operate in regions of very high particle flux and radiation, forward calorimeters commonly employ radiation-hard materials and sensors such as tungsten absorbers combined with quartz fibers, silicon, or diamond detectors, and require fine segmentation and fast readout.

The term FCAL is also associated with collaborative R&D efforts for future linear colliders; the FCAL Collaboration developed prototype forward detectors including LumiCal (for precision luminosity measurement) and BeamCal (for fast beam monitoring and low-angle tagging) for ILC and CLIC concepts. Outside high-energy physics, FCAL may be used as an acronym by various organizations or projects; its precise meaning depends on context.
