FACSjärjestelmää

FACSjärjestelmää is a Finnish term that translates to "FACS system" in English. FACS stands for Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting. Therefore, FACSjärjestelmää refers to a system or instrument designed for and used in the process of fluorescence-activated cell sorting.

Fluorescence-activated cell sorting is a specialized type of flow cytometry that physically separates a heterogeneous mixture of cells into two or more different populations, at single-cell resolution, based upon specific physical and chemical characteristics. These characteristics are typically identified by fluorescent markers that have been attached to the cells. The process involves suspending cells in a stream of fluid and passing them through a laser beam. As cells pass through the laser, they scatter light and, if they are labeled with fluorescent substances, emit fluorescence. Detectors measure these light emissions and scattering patterns.

Based on the data collected for each cell, the FACSjärjestelmää can then be programmed to physically isolate specific cell populations. This is achieved by charging the droplets containing the cells of interest and deflecting them into separate collection tubes. The ability of FACSjärjestelmää to sort cells based on multiple parameters simultaneously makes it a powerful tool in various scientific disciplines, including immunology, molecular biology, genetics, and cell biology.
