Fürstbistümer
Fürstbistümer, often translated as Prince-Bishoprics, were a unique form of state in the Holy Roman Empire and other parts of Central Europe. They were territories ruled by a bishop who also held secular princely authority. This dual role meant that the bishop was both the spiritual leader of his diocese and the temporal ruler of the surrounding lands. The authority of a Prince-Bishop combined ecclesiastical jurisdiction with feudal sovereignty.
