Extruderverschub

Extruderverschub, often translated as extruder slip or extruder yaw, refers to the undesirable lateral movement or rotation of an extruder screw within its barrel during the extrusion process. This phenomenon can occur in various types of extruders, including single-screw and twin-screw configurations, and across different polymer processing applications.

The primary cause of extruderverschub is typically a mismatch in friction between the screw and the barrel. If the torque applied to the screw is not uniformly distributed or if there are localized areas of increased friction, the screw can be forced to deviate from its intended rotational axis. This can be exacerbated by factors such as improper screw or barrel design, wear and tear on these components, inconsistent material properties, or operational issues like incorrect temperature settings or screw speed.

The consequences of extruderverschub can be significant, leading to reduced product quality and potential damage to the extrusion equipment. It can result in uneven melt distribution, inconsistent wall thickness in extruded profiles, increased shear rates in specific zones, and premature wear on both the screw and barrel. In severe cases, it can cause the screw to jam or even break. Monitoring and control systems are often employed to detect and mitigate extruderverschub, ensuring stable and efficient operation.
