Expressvägar

Expressvägar are a type of high-speed road found primarily in Sweden and Finland. They are designed to facilitate rapid long-distance travel by offering a limited-access roadway with multiple lanes in each direction. The term translates directly to "expressway" in English.

These roads typically feature grade-separated intersections, meaning that crossing roads pass over or under the expressväg, eliminating traffic lights and stop signs. This design maximizes traffic flow and minimizes travel times. Speed limits on expressvägar are generally higher than on regular roads, often around 110 or 120 kilometers per hour.

Expressvägar are distinct from motorways (motorvägar) in that they may not always have a physical barrier separating opposing traffic lanes and might include some at-grade intersections, although these are less common. They are a crucial part of the Nordic road infrastructure, connecting major cities and economic centers. Their construction and maintenance are overseen by national transportation authorities.
