ExpressLanes are a type of variable toll lane system implemented on freeways. These lanes are designed to offer a predictable and faster travel option for drivers willing to pay a toll. The toll price is dynamic, meaning it fluctuates based on real-time traffic conditions. When traffic is light, the toll is lower, and as congestion increases, the toll rises to discourage more drivers from entering the ExpressLanes. This mechanism aims to keep the traffic flow within the ExpressLanes at a certain speed, typically above 45 miles per hour.

ExpressLanes are often implemented by converting existing general-purpose lanes or shoulders into tolled facilities. Drivers typically need a transponder, such as a FasTrak or compatible device, to use these lanes, and their account is charged the toll rate displayed on overhead electronic signs.
