Expectations

Expectations are anticipations or beliefs about what will happen or what is likely to happen in the future. They are often based on past experiences, observations, or information. Expectations can be personal, such as a person's expectations for their own performance or future, or they can be collective, such as societal expectations for behavior or outcomes. They play a crucial role in motivation, decision-making, and social interactions. For instance, high expectations can drive individuals to strive for excellence, while low expectations might lead to complacency or underperformance. Expectations can also influence perceptions and interpretations of events, a phenomenon known as the expectancy effect. This occurs when people's expectations about an event influence their perception of that event, leading to a confirmation bias where they tend to interpret new information as confirming their pre-existing beliefs.
