Exoplanetológia

Exoplanetológia is the field of astronomy dedicated to the study of planets that orbit stars other than our Sun, known as exoplanets. This relatively new discipline has blossomed with technological advancements that allow for the detection and characterization of these distant worlds.

The primary goal of exoplanetológia is to understand the diversity of planetary systems beyond our own, to determine the prevalence of Earth-like planets, and to search for signs of life elsewhere in the universe. Scientists employ various methods to discover exoplanets. The transit method, where a planet passes in front of its star causing a slight dip in brightness, and the radial velocity method, which detects the wobble of a star caused by an orbiting planet's gravity, are two of the most successful techniques.

Once detected, exoplanets can be further studied. Telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope can analyze the light that passes through an exoplanet's atmosphere, revealing its chemical composition. This atmospheric data is crucial for assessing a planet's potential habitability, looking for biosignatures such as oxygen or methane.

The study of exoplanets has already revealed a vast array of planetary types, from gas giants larger than Jupiter to rocky worlds smaller than Earth. Many exoplanets are found in the "habitable zone" of their stars, the region where temperatures could allow liquid water to exist on a planet's surface.
