Eurotium

Eurotium is a genus of fungi in the family Trichocomaceae, within the order Eurotiales of the phylum Ascomycota. The genus was historically established for the sexual (teleomorphic) stages of several Aspergillus species. In modern taxonomy, many species formerly placed in Eurotium are now classified as Aspergillus; the name Eurotium is often retained for the sexual morphs or used in historical or specialized contexts.

Ecology and morphology: Eurotium species are typically xerophilic or xerotolerant, thriving on dried foods and in stored products. They form sexual fruiting bodies called cleistothecia, which contain asci and ascospores. The associated asexual states are generally the Aspergillus forms. In culture, Eurotium-related life cycles reflect the close connection between the teleomorph and the corresponding anamorph.

Significance: Some Eurotium species can produce mycotoxins under suitable conditions, notably ochratoxin A in associations with species linked to Aspergillus ochraceus. This has implications for food safety in stored cereals, coffee, dried fruits, and related products. They are also relevant to studies of food spoilage, indoor mold, and fungal biodiversity in dry environments.

Representative species: Eurotium herbariorum, Eurotium amstelodami, Eurotium repens, and Eurotium ochraceum (the teleomorph of Aspergillus ochraceus). The taxonomic boundary between Eurotium and Aspergillus reflects changing classifications, with the teleomorph name mainly used for historical literature and life-cycle descriptions.
