Euripos

Euripos, also known as Euripus, is a narrow strait in central Greece that separates the island of Euboea (Evia) from the Greek mainland near the city of Chalkida. It links the Aegean Sea with the Maliakos Gulf and serves as a natural channel between the island and the mainland.

Geographically, the strait runs in a generally east–west orientation and is relatively confined in width, with water depths varying along its length. A prominent feature of Euripos is its tidal current, which is strong and changes direction with the tides. This tidal behavior has been noted since antiquity and has influenced navigation and local maritime practices.
