Etylenglykoli

Etylenglykoli, also known as etan-1,2-diol or monoglykol, is an organic compound with the formula C2H6O2. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is miscible with water. Etylenglykoli is primarily used as an antifreeze in automotive cooling systems due to its low freezing point. When mixed with water, it significantly lowers the freezing point of the mixture, preventing the coolant from freezing in cold temperatures and thus protecting the engine from damage.

Beyond its use as an antifreeze, etylenglykoli is also a crucial component in the production of polyester fibers and resins, commonly found in fabrics like PET (polyethylene terephthalate). It serves as a monomer in the polymerization process. Additionally, it finds applications in deicing fluids for aircraft and as a component in hydraulic brake fluids.

Despite its utility, etylenglykoli is toxic to humans and animals if ingested. Its sweet taste can be deceptive, and even small amounts can cause severe kidney damage, central nervous system depression, and potentially death. Proper handling and storage are essential to prevent accidental exposure. Recycling of used etylenglykoli is also an important consideration to minimize environmental impact and recover the valuable chemical.
