Etlenség

Etlenség is a Hungarian word that translates to hunger or starvation. In a biological context, it refers to the physiological state experienced by an organism when it lacks sufficient food to meet its energy and nutritional needs. This can range from mild hunger pangs, a signal to seek food, to severe malnutrition and starvation, which can lead to organ damage, disease, and ultimately death if not addressed.

The experience of etlenség is complex, involving a cascade of hormonal and metabolic changes. When the body's energy stores deplete, hormones like ghrelin are released, stimulating appetite. Simultaneously, metabolic processes may slow down to conserve energy. Prolonged etlenség can result in a breakdown of muscle tissue for energy, impaired immune function, and cognitive difficulties.

Beyond the physiological, etlenség also carries significant social and psychological dimensions. Food insecurity and lack of access to adequate nutrition are major global issues, impacting millions of people.
