Ethynonitriles

Ethynonitriles, also known as cyanoacetylenes, are organic compounds with the general formula RC≡CN, where R is a carbon-containing group. They are characterized by the presence of both a triple bond (acetylene) and a nitrile group (-C≡N). This combination of functional groups makes ethynonitriles highly reactive and valuable intermediates in organic synthesis.

The simplest ethynonitrile is cyanoacetylene (HC≡CN), a gas at room temperature. Other ethynonitriles are typically liquids or low-melting solids.
