Ethnicitynation

Ethnicitynation is a theoretical concept used in sociology and political science to describe a political entity in which ethnicity serves as the principal criterion for national membership and public life. It refers to a state or community in which common ethnicity—defined by shared ancestry, language, culture, and history—forms the central basis of national identity and political authority. In an ethnicitynation, membership, access to public office, citizenship, public services, and social privileges may be closely linked to ethnic status, and state symbols, laws, and institutions may reflect the dominant ethnic group’s culture.

The concept is closely related to ethnonationalism, but in scholarly discussions it is sometimes used to analyze the organizational logic of states where ethnic boundaries align strongly with political authority. It is employed to highlight tensions between ethnic exclusivity and minority rights, and to examine how governance, policy, and social cohesion are shaped by ethnic criteria for belonging.

Critics argue that the notion of an ethnicitynation risks legitimizing discrimination and reducing political inclusion for minorities, potentially increasing ethnically based mobilization or conflict. Proponents may view it as a descriptive framework for understanding governance patterns that arise from historical settlement, demographic change, and political bargaining.

There is no universally accepted definition or criterion for an ethnicitynation, and usage varies across disciplines. Analyses often contrast it with civic nationalism, liberal pluralism, and multicultural approaches, focusing on questions of citizenship, language policy, education, and public representation.
