Et3N

Triethylamine (Et3N) is an organic tertiary amine with the formula (C2H5)3N. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a strong, fishy odor. It is miscible with water and many organic solvents and has a boiling point around 89 °C. As a base, Et3N is relatively weak compared to some amines, with the pKa of its conjugate acid near 10.7 and a pKb around 3.3.

Industrial production of triethylamine typically involves the amination and alkylation of ethyl-containing precursors, followed by purification by distillation. It is commonly handled and stored under conditions that control fumes and moisture.

Uses include its role as a non-nucleophilic base in organic synthesis. It is frequently employed to scavenge acids and moisture in reactions, activate carboxylic acid derivatives, and facilitate the formation of amides, esters, and various pharmaceutical intermediates. It is also used as a solvent for organic reactions and in the manufacture of surfactants and dyes.

Safety: Triethylamine is a flammable liquid and vapor and can be irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Inhalation or skin contact should be avoided; use in a fume hood with appropriate personal protective equipment. It can react with oxidizers and acids, forming corrosive salts with strong acids.
