Estrogeenituotanto

Estrogeenituotanto is the Finnish term for estrogen production. Estrogen is a group of steroid hormones that are the primary female sex hormones. They are crucial for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. While predominantly associated with females, estrogen is also produced in smaller amounts in males.

In females, the primary sites of estrogen production are the ovaries. The developing follicles within the ovaries synthesize and release estradiol, the most potent and abundant form of estrogen, throughout the menstrual cycle. During pregnancy, the placenta also becomes a major source of estrogen. After menopause, when ovarian function declines, estrogen production significantly decreases, although small amounts are still produced by other tissues like adipose tissue and the adrenal glands through the conversion of androgens.

In males, testes produce smaller quantities of estrogen, mainly estradiol, from Leydig cells. This production plays a role in regulating sperm production and maintaining bone density.

Estrogen has widespread effects throughout the body, influencing not only reproductive health but also bone metabolism, cardiovascular function, skin health, mood, and cognitive processes. Fluctuations in estrogen levels can lead to various physiological changes, such as those experienced during puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause.
