Essentism
Essentism is a philosophical concept that posits the existence of inherent, unchanging properties or natures that define what something is. In essence, it suggests that things have a core essence that makes them that particular thing and not something else. This essence is considered fundamental and is not contingent on external factors or individual perception. For example, an essentist might argue that the essence of a chair is its function as something to sit on, and this essential property is present even if the chair is broken or not currently being used.
This philosophical stance has roots in ancient Greek philosophy, particularly in the ideas of Plato and Aristotle.
However, essentism has also faced significant criticism. Critics argue that it is difficult to identify or
