Esplanadi

Esplanadi refers to a large public park located in the Heart of Helsinki, Finland. Situated along the south coast of the country, it serves as a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. The park spans over 10 hectares and features two main sections: the East Esplanade and the West Esplanade.

Geographical Location

Esplanadi is situated in a prime area of Helsinki, immediately adjacent to the Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral. It has an elongated shape, stretching from the Uspenski Cathedral to the Pohjala Park. The park shares boundaries with several other significant Helsinki landmarks, making it a central hub for the city.

Nature and Features

The park boasts an abundance of trees, lawns, and flowerbeds. Visitors can also find several notable features within the park's grounds, including the statue of Alexander II, a swan pond, and several walking and bike paths. In summer, the area hosts various cultural events, such as outdoor concerts, art exhibitions, and food festivals.

History

During the early 20th century, the area now occupied by Esplanadi was under development. Between 1911 and 1912, Jay Arthur Jensen designed the original pathways and landscape for the area. Later, in 1934, Jensen modified the park's layout to include the swan pond and Alexander II statue. Over the years, Esplanadi has evolved into one of the most recognizable and beloved public spaces in Helsinki, famous for its beauty and lively atmosphere.

The park continues to host a wide range of social and cultural activities, fostering a strong sense of community among its visitors.
