Espesan

Espesan is a constructed language created for the fictional world featured in the Isles of Espa series. Designed to serve as the lingua franca of the Espa archipelago, Espesan was developed as part of worldbuilding by the author to provide a common cultural and linguistic backbone for its inhabitants. In the in-universe timeline, Espesan emerges as a pidgin during early trade and evolves into a full-fledged language with regional varieties.

Phonology and writing: Espesan has a five-vowel system and a consonant inventory typical of many European languages, with a clear CV syllable structure. Stress falls on the penultimate syllable. The writing system is Latin-based, using an alphabet of 23 letters with diacritics to mark vowel quality and tone in some texts.

Grammar: Espesan is described as agglutinative and SVO (subject–verb–object). Nouns lack gender, and plural is marked by a suffix, commonly -ar, in many contexts. The definite article is el and appears pre-nominally. Verbs encode tense and aspect with prefixes and suffixes, while mood and evidentiality are expressed via clitics. Pronouns distinguish inclusive and exclusive first-person plural.

Dialects and usage: Northern Espesan and Southern Espesan are attested in the fictional world, with regional phonological shifts and lexical differences. Espesan appears in literature, broadcasts, and school materials within the story, and has inspired fan-created media and translations.
