Espandere

Espandere is a transitive Italian verb meaning to make something wider, larger, or more extensive, and to spread it over a greater area or scope. It can refer to physical expansion, such as enlarging a building or extending a city’s boundaries, as well as to more abstract growth, for example expanding production, a network, a market, or knowledge. The verb is often used in business, technology, urban planning, and everyday language.

The term comes from Latin expandere, formed by ex- (out) and pandere (to spread). In Italian it is closely related to but distinct from spandere, which is used for spreading or scattering in a more general or sometimes literary sense. Espandere has a neutral, technical nuance when describing deliberate increases in size or reach.

Intransitively, the reflexive form espandersi describes a subject that itself grows or expands, as in la città si espande.
