Erörterungsaufsatz

Erörterungsaufsatz, also known as a discussion essay or argumentative essay in English, is a common essay type in German-speaking educational contexts. It requires students to explore a given topic or thesis from multiple perspectives, weighing different arguments and counterarguments. The primary goal is to develop a well-reasoned and substantiated opinion on the subject matter.

The structure of an Erörterungsaufsatz typically includes an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. The introduction presents the topic or problem and often states the thesis or the question to be addressed. The main body is where the core argumentation takes place. It's divided into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific argument or aspect of the topic. Arguments are usually presented in a logical sequence, often moving from less important to more important points, or by discussing pro and contra arguments in separate sections. Crucially, each argument must be supported by evidence, examples, or logical reasoning.

There are two main types of Erörterungsaufsatz: the linear and the dialectical (or erweiterte) form. In the linear form, arguments are presented in a cumulative manner, building towards a final conclusion. The dialectical form, on the other hand, explicitly presents both sides of an issue (pro and contra) before synthesizing them to arrive at a justified personal opinion. The conclusion summarizes the main points, restates the thesis in a new way, and offers a final reflection or outlook. The emphasis is on critical thinking, balanced argumentation, and clear, coherent writing.
