Erätuotantoja, often translated as batch production, is a manufacturing process where a specific quantity of a product, known as a batch, is produced at one time. Unlike continuous production, where goods are made without interruption, or project production, which is for unique, large-scale items, batch production involves creating a set number of items before moving on to the next stage or a different product.

This method is characterized by distinct runs or batches. Each batch goes through the same sequence of manufacturing operations. Once a batch is completed, equipment may be cleaned, reconfigured, or reset before the next batch is produced. This allows for flexibility in manufacturing, as different products can be made using the same equipment without extensive retooling between individual items.

Batch production is commonly used for products where demand is moderate or variable, or when a variety of related products are manufactured. Examples include pharmaceuticals, baked goods, chemicals, and certain types of electronic components. The size of the batch can vary significantly, from a few items to thousands, depending on the product, market demand, and production capacity.

Key advantages of batch production include its flexibility, the ability to produce a range of products, and potentially lower setup costs compared to producing each item individually. However, it can also lead to longer lead times, potential for inventory build-up between stages, and the need for careful scheduling and management to maintain efficiency and minimize downtime between batches.
