These forces can break down rocks and soil into smaller pieces, which are then carried away. One common way to categorize erosion is by the agent causing it. Water erosion is a primary type, encompassing processes like splash erosion (raindrop impact), sheet erosion (uniform removal of soil by water flow), rill erosion (formation of small channels), and gully erosion (enlargement of rills into larger channels). Wind erosion, prevalent in arid and semi-arid regions, involves the movement of soil particles by wind, often leading to deflation (removal of fine particles) and abrasion (grinding of surfaces by wind-borne particles). Glacial erosion occurs when glaciers move, carving out valleys and transporting large amounts of debris.

Another classification can be based on the location or scale of erosion. This might include terrestrial erosion occurring on land surfaces, coastal erosion affecting shorelines, and even subsurface erosion where water flow beneath the surface removes soil. The impact of human activities, such as agriculture, deforestation, and construction, can significantly accelerate erosion rates, leading to what is known as accelerated erosion, distinct from natural or geologic erosion. Understanding these different types of erosion is crucial for land management, conservation efforts, and mitigating environmental damage.
