Eroahdistuneisuushäiriö, also known as separation anxiety disorder, is a psychological condition characterized by excessive fear or anxiety concerning separation from individuals to whom the person is attached. This anxiety is considered inappropriate for the individual's developmental level and can cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Common symptoms include recurrent and excessive distress when anticipating or experiencing separation from home or from significant attachment figures. Individuals may also experience persistent and excessive worry about losing their attachment figures or about the possibility of a distressing event that may cause separation, such as getting lost or being kidnapped. They might also have persistent reluctance or refusal to go away from home or to go to school or work because of fear of separation. Furthermore, there can be persistent and excessive fear of or reluctance to be alone or without attachment figures, and persistent reluctance or refusal to sleep away from home or to sleep near an attachment figure. Nightmares with separation themes and complaints of physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, when separation is anticipated or occurs are also frequently observed.

The disorder can manifest in children, adolescents, and adults, though it is most commonly diagnosed in children. The exact causes are not fully understood, but a combination of genetic predisposition, personality traits, and stressful life events may contribute to its development. Diagnosis is typically made by a qualified mental health professional based on a thorough evaluation of symptoms and their impact on the individual's life. Treatment often involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, and in some cases, medication may be considered.
