Eristysöljyissä

Eristysöljyissä, or insulating oils, are dielectric fluids used primarily in electrical equipment such as transformers, high-voltage cables, and circuit breakers. Their main function is to provide electrical insulation, preventing arcing and short circuits between conductive components. In addition to their insulating properties, these oils also serve as coolants, dissipating heat generated during the operation of the equipment. This cooling is crucial for maintaining the longevity and efficient performance of the electrical devices.

The most common type of insulating oil is mineral oil, derived from petroleum. It is widely used due to its excellent dielectric strength, good thermal conductivity, and cost-effectiveness. However, mineral oil is flammable and can pose environmental risks if spilled. Alternative insulating oils have been developed, including natural esters (vegetable-based oils) and synthetic esters. Natural esters are biodegradable and have a higher flash point, making them a safer option, though they can be more expensive and may have different aging characteristics compared to mineral oil. Synthetic esters offer a balance of improved fire safety and good electrical properties.

The quality of insulating oil is critical for the reliable operation of electrical apparatus. Over time, insulating oils can degrade due to factors such as oxidation, moisture absorption, and contamination with foreign particles. This degradation reduces their insulating and cooling capabilities, potentially leading to equipment failure. Therefore, regular testing and maintenance of insulating oils, including filtration and oil replacement, are essential for ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of electrical systems.
