Membership in an erikoisyksikkö requires extensive training, rigorous physical and psychological evaluations, and a high degree of discipline. Personnel are selected for their exceptional skills in areas such as marksmanship, tactical maneuvering, negotiation, and close-quarters combat. The units are equipped with specialized gear and weaponry, including advanced communication systems, protective equipment, and non-lethal or lethal force options appropriate for the given situation.

In Finland, the National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) and the Police University College (Polamk) are instrumental in the development and deployment of these special units.
