Erikoiskalvot

Erikoiskalvot, literally “special membranes” in Finnish, refer to membranes designed with tailored physical, chemical, or structural properties to address specific separation tasks beyond standard commercially available types. They are used to improve selectivity, permeability, chemical resistance, or fouling performance for challenging feed streams in various industries, including water treatment, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and energy.

Materials and forms commonly include polymeric membranes (such as polyamide, polysulfone, polyethersulfone, PVDF) as well as ceramic membranes (alumina, zirconia). Erikoiskalvot may be flat-sheet, hollow-fiber, or tubular, and often employ multilayer or composite architectures, surface modifications, or mixed-matrix approaches to tune pore size and surface chemistry.

Key performance characteristics include permeation flux, selectivity or rejection, chemical compatibility, temperature tolerance, and fouling resistance. Special membranes may feature antifouling coatings, functionalized surfaces for selective ion or molecule transport, solvent stability, or enhanced durability under harsh operating conditions.

Typical applications encompass desalination and municipal wastewater treatment, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical and biotechnological separations, gas separation, and energy-related uses such as fuel cells and redox-flow systems. Development in this field focuses on increasing efficiency, reducing fouling, enabling longer lifetimes, and lowering production costs.

Development and standardization draw on established membrane science techniques, including phase inversion, track-etching, electrospinning, and sintering. International testing protocols assess metrics such as permeability, selectivity, and fouling propensity to ensure performance meets application requirements.
