Epäsuoravalaistuksessa, often translated as indirect lighting, is a lighting technique where light is not emitted directly from a source into the space, but rather reflected off surfaces before reaching the observer. This contrasts with direct lighting, where light travels in a straight line from the source to the illuminated area.

The primary characteristic of indirect lighting is its soft, diffused quality. Light sources are typically concealed, for example, within coves, behind architectural elements, or within luminaires designed to direct light upwards or towards walls. The reflected light then spreads evenly across a room, minimizing harsh shadows and glare. This makes it particularly suitable for environments where visual comfort is paramount, such as living rooms, bedrooms, or offices.

The effect of indirect lighting is often described as creating a serene and spacious atmosphere. Because the light is not concentrated in one spot, it can make a room feel larger and more open. It also contributes to a more uniform illuminance distribution, reducing the contrast between bright and dark areas. While indirect lighting is generally considered more energy-efficient for achieving uniform illumination due to its diffusion properties, the effectiveness can depend on the reflectivity of the surfaces within the space. Lighter colored walls and ceilings will reflect more light, enhancing the overall efficiency of the lighting scheme.
